Low Chlorine
Free chlorine below the minimum effective level for the current CYA concentration.
Definition
Low free chlorine is the single most common and dangerous pool chemistry problem. When FC drops below the minimum for the current CYA level, the pool loses its primary protection against pathogens and algae. Causes include: heavy bather loads, hot sunny weather (UV degradation), CYA too high (reducing chlorine activity), insufficient dosing frequency, or empty chlorinator. The remedy is immediate addition of chlorine to restore FC to the target range. If CYA is above 80 ppm, a partial drain may be needed before chlorine can be maintained effectively.
