Definition
Filtration is the continuous process of circulating pool water through a filter to remove suspended particles — algae, dust, debris, dead skin cells, and other particulate matter. Effective filtration requires adequate pump flow rate, properly sized filter, regular cleaning, and sufficient daily pump run time. Filtration does not replace chemical sanitization but works synergistically — the filter removes the physical matter that would otherwise increase chemical demand. The three main filter types (sand, cartridge, DE) differ in filtration fineness, maintenance frequency, and water usage.
