Definition
Diatomaceous earth (DE) filters use a fine powder made from fossilized diatoms (microscopic algae) as the filter media. The DE powder coats internal grids or fingers, providing the finest filtration of any pool filter type — down to 3–5 microns. This makes DE filters excellent for pools requiring crystal-clear water. Maintenance involves backwashing (which removes the used DE) followed by adding fresh DE through the skimmer. DE must be handled carefully as fine particles can be an inhalation hazard. Internal grids require annual cleaning and periodic inspection.
