Turnover Time
The time required for the pump to circulate the entire pool volume through the filter once.
Definition
Turnover time is the number of hours required for the pump to move the full pool volume through the filtration system. It is calculated as pool volume divided by pump flow rate. PHTA recommends a maximum turnover time of 8 hours for residential pools (one complete turnover in 8 hours or less). Shorter turnover times indicate better filtration — most high-quality pools achieve 6-hour or less turnovers. Hot tub turnover is faster due to smaller volume; the target is typically 2–4 turnovers per day.
