Definition
High free chlorine (above 5 ppm) causes bleaching of swimwear, eye and skin irritation, and respiratory irritation in enclosed spaces. It occurs after an accidental over-dose, feeder malfunction, or over-shocking. The pool should be closed to swimmers until FC drops below 5 ppm (3 ppm for hot tubs). Natural dissipation by sunlight and time is the safest remedy. Sodium thiosulfate can neutralize chlorine in emergencies but should be used sparingly — reducing FC too quickly can cause a rebound. Running the pump without cover during daylight hours accelerates UV degradation of excess chlorine.
