Hydrogen Peroxide
An oxidizer used in non-chlorine pool systems and as an emergency chlorine neutralizer.
Definition
Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is used as an oxidizer in biguanide (polyhexamethylene biguanide, or PHMB) pool systems, which use hydrogen peroxide rather than chlorine for sanitization. In chlorine pools, hydrogen peroxide can be used to rapidly reduce excess chlorine in emergencies, but the two chemicals react violently if mixed in concentrated form — always add to pool water separately, never mix directly. Hydrogen peroxide-based systems require dedicated equipment and are incompatible with chlorine.
