Pool Chemical Timeline

v2026.07

After adding any pool chemical, waiting the correct amount of time before retesting or re-entry is essential for accurate results and swimmer safety.

Never add multiple chemicals simultaneously and never assume a chemical has fully dispersed without waiting for the recommended time and running the pump.

Wait Times After Chemical Addition

ChemicalWait Before RetestingWait Before SwimmingNotes
Liquid chlorine30 min15 min (if FC <5 ppm)Run pump during wait
Granular shock (cal-hypo)2 hoursUntil FC < 5 ppmPre-dissolve before adding
Muriatic acid (pH down)30–60 min30 minAdd near return jets
Soda ash (pH up)2–4 hours30 minPre-dissolve; may cause cloudiness
Sodium bicarbonate (TA up)4–6 hours30 minAllow full dissolution
Calcium chloride (hardness up)4–6 hours2 hoursHeat reaction — dilute first
CYA stabilizer24–48 hours30 minDissolves slowly
Pool salt24 hours30 minAllow full dispersion
Clarifier2–4 hours15 minRun filter during wait
Algaecide30 min15 minFollow label directions

Notes

  • Always run the pump during the wait period to ensure even distribution.
  • Re-entry after shock is safe when FC tests below 5 ppm — not based on time alone.
  • Never add two chemicals to the pool simultaneously.
