Pool emergencies require systematic treatment in the correct order. Rushing the process or skipping steps increases recovery time.
Initial Assessment
- Close pool to all users immediately.
- Test: FC, TC, CC, pH, TA, CYA, and note water colour and clarity.
- Identify likely cause: pump failure, feeder empty, high CYA, extended period without service.
- Photograph current condition (for liability records).
- Verify pump is running and filter is operating at normal pressure.
Green Pool Recovery (Algae Bloom)
- Step 1: Lower pH to 7.2 using muriatic acid — this maximises chlorine activity.
- Step 2: Brush all pool surfaces vigorously to break algae biofilm.
- Step 3: Add shock to achieve 30 ppm FC — use the shock calculator for exact dose.
- Step 4: Run filter 24 hours continuously.
- Step 5: Test FC every 4–6 hours. If below 10 ppm, add more chlorine to maintain 10+ ppm.
- Step 6: When water turns grey-white, vacuum dead algae to waste. Backwash filter.
- Step 7: Continue filtering until FC drops naturally to 5 ppm or below.
- Step 8: Run full balance test and correct all parameters.
- Step 9: Photograph recovered water and log the event.
- Step 10: Identify root cause and adjust maintenance to prevent recurrence.
Moderately Compromised Water (Cloudy, High CC)
- Step 1: Test and record all parameters.
- Step 2: Adjust pH to 7.2–7.4.
- Step 3: Shock to 10 ppm FC.
- Step 4: Add clarifier after chemistry is corrected.
- Step 5: Run filter 24 hours.
- Step 6: Retest and balance all parameters.
Notes
- Never allow guests into the pool during recovery.
- Log the event and all corrective actions.
- If recovery takes more than 72 hours, consider whether a partial drain is needed.
