Winterization
Winterization is the process of preparing a pool or hot tub for winter shutdown, including draining, blowing out plumbing lines, and protecting equipment from freeze damage.
In Plain Language
Pool winterization typically involves: lowering the water level below the skimmer, adding winterising chemicals to the remaining water, blowing out all plumbing lines with compressed air, plugging all fittings, installing an air pillow under the cover (to absorb ice expansion), and covering the pool. Hot tub winterization requires fully draining all water from the shell and all plumbing to prevent freeze cracking.
Why It Matters
Incomplete winterization is the most common cause of expensive freeze damage to pool and spa equipment, including cracked pipes and fittings.
