Sanitizer
A sanitizer is a chemical agent that reduces microbial contamination in pool water to safe levels for human contact.
Definition
A sanitizer is a chemical agent that reduces microbial contamination in pool water to safe levels for human contact.
Typical Values: Chlorine: 1–3 ppm (pools); Bromine: 3–6 ppm
In Plain Language
In pool and spa applications, the primary sanitizers are chlorine and bromine. Sanitizers work by oxidising and destroying the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, and algae on contact. Secondary sanitizers (UV, ozone) can reduce the required chlorine levels but do not replace the residual sanitiser that protects water between treatments.
Why It Matters
Without an effective sanitizer at an adequate level, pool water can transmit recreational water illnesses (RWIs) within hours of contamination.
Typical Values
Chlorine: 1–3 ppm (pools); Bromine: 3–6 ppm
