No single validated dosing equation is published here. Unlike liquid chlorine or alkalinity, pH adjustment is a carbonate-buffered titration problem: the acid or base needed for a given pH change depends materially on total alkalinity (and, more weakly, cyanuric acid) -- neither of which a two-input pH/volume calculator can account for. Professional water-chemistry references that publish exact dosing tables for chlorine, alkalinity, and calcium hardness deliberately do not publish an equivalent fixed table for pH, and instead direct users to an empirical acid-demand test.

Pool: 15,000 gallons. Current pH: 7.8. Target pH: 7.4.

This calculator does not compute a chemical quantity for this scenario. It reports: - Direction: pH needs to be lowered (current pH is above target). - Magnitude: a moderate adjustment (0.4 pH units from target). - Guidance: add a pH reducer product per its label instructions, a little at a time, and retest 30–60 minutes after each addition before adding more.

How This Formula Works

pH adjustment is different from chlorine, alkalinity, or calcium hardness dosing: those are straightforward mass-balance relationships (a fixed amount of product changes the parameter by a predictable amount per gallon), so this site publishes formulas and calculators for them. pH is not -- the same acid dose produces a different pH change depending on the water's total alkalinity, because alkalinity buffers (resists) pH change. A pool with high alkalinity needs meaningfully more acid for the same pH drop than a pool with low alkalinity.

Because this site's pH calculators do not collect total alkalinity (or cyanuric acid, or a product concentration), they cannot responsibly compute a precise chemical quantity. Instead, the calculators tell you the direction your pH needs to move and a qualitative sense of how far off you are (a small, moderate, or substantial adjustment), then direct you to your chosen product's label instructions, added incrementally with retesting between additions -- the same practice professional water-testing guidance recommends when a fixed dosing table is not available.

The professionally rigorous alternative is an acid-demand test: a test-kit procedure (add a reagent dropwise to a water sample until it reaches your target pH, then scale the drop count to your pool's volume using the reagent manufacturer's own conversion table) that empirically measures the combined effect of pH, alkalinity, cyanuric acid, and temperature without needing to model them individually. This site does not yet offer an acid-demand-test calculator -- the specific pH-target scaling table needed to build one responsibly has not yet been sourced (see Limitations).

Limitations & Notes

No validated closed-form formula or manufacturer dosing table for pH-target acid/base dosing (as distinct from total-alkalinity dosing, for which a validated table does exist and is used by the alkalinity formula) was found as of this writing. If a future review locates and fully verifies such a source -- particularly a pH-keyed acid-demand-test scaling table from a test-kit manufacturer -- this page and the underlying calculators may be updated to reflect it. Until then, treat the qualitative guidance here as a starting point: always follow your specific product's label instructions, add incrementally, and retest before adding more.
