Chemical Entity

Manganese

A dissolved metal that causes black or purple staining in pool water.

Definition

Manganese enters pool water through well water or certain fill water sources. Like iron, it stains pool surfaces when oxidized — manganese stains are typically black or dark brown/purple rather than the rust-red of iron. Metal sequestrants hold manganese in solution to prevent precipitation. Testing with a metal test kit distinguishes manganese from other staining causes. Thorough filtration after sequestrant treatment gradually removes manganese from the water.
