Persistent foam on pool or spa water surface caused by surfactants, high TDS, or algaecide.
Definition
Foam on pool or hot tub water is caused by surfactants — substances that lower water surface tension. Common sources include body oils, lotions, soap residue on swimwear, certain algaecides (polyquats), and high TDS. In hot tubs, foaming is more common due to smaller water volumes and higher bather loads. Mild foaming can be treated with an anti-foam agent as a temporary fix, but the underlying cause must be addressed: rinsing swimwear without soap, showering before entering, reducing algaecide dose, or changing the water if TDS is very high.
