Chlorine vs Bromine for Hot Tubs
Both sanitize spa water. We focus on chlorine dosing with our Hot Tub Chlorine Calculator; here’s how they compare.
Chlorine
- Familiar, widely available, works well in hot water
- Target 3–5 ppm for hot tubs; test and add regularly
- Can have a stronger smell in enclosed spas; proper levels reduce odor
Bromine
- Softer smell and less harsh for some users at similar sanitizer levels
- Stable in heat; good for spas; often used in tablets or cartridges
- Typically more expensive and less common than chlorine
Which for hot tubs?
Chlorine is the most common and our calculators support it. Bromine is a good option if you prefer it or have sensitivity. Either way, keep sanitizer in the correct range (e.g. 3–5 ppm chlorine or manufacturer’s bromine range), and maintain pH and alkalinity. Use our Hot Tub pH Calculator and Hot Tub Chemical Chart.
